Maui on Our Minds

We live on Maui, a unique little volcanic island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Both of us have lived here for over ten years and consider it our home with no desire or intention of leaving. We are very active in the community and this BLog will attempt to share with you many of our experiences in this beautiful place.

Anniversary

Caren and Wayne have been together for five years and are headed to twenty-five. We quietly celebrated our anniversary on Sept. 8 but will be taking a cruise around the Hawaiian islands in late October. We have made the decision that if so many people spend thousands of dollars to come out here, why should we spend thousands to leave. We spend our vacations...….trips,,,and ...getaways here in the islands. We will be on the ship for our favorite event here on Maui, Halloween. We usually go to Lahaina's Mardi Gras of the Pacific celebration, but his year we'll have to make the fun on the NCL Spirit of Aloha.

Here are some pictures of us during various events and outings during the past five years.

WOW -Wailea on Wednesday is one of our farovite pass times. The upscale shopping center at the Shops at Wailea has a number of art galleries we enjoy and several excellent restaurants that we love.

We also love to celebrate our friend's special occasions around the area and find many of the hotel lounges and restarants perfect places to have a convivial gathering.

Caren and I share the same affection for the great variety and high level of all the performing arts here on our little island. Art Night in Lahaina every Friday evening is a great time for us to visit the bautiful art done by Maui talents that we can't afford to buy but love to visit. We met dancing and still go as frequently as we can, although places to dance our style of dancing are diminishing.

Life is very enjoyable here with lots of music, art, entertainment and many like-minded friends to share it all with…..not to mention the beauty and weather of the place. Sunsets fare usually awesome and we take in as many as possible.

Special parties are a big thing here and this birthday party was no exception. All the guests were to come as royalty to honor the "queen" fo the night. It's odd, but I don't own a suit or sportcoat.....but I do own a tuxedo for these special occasions.

Life is good and we are doing all we can to enjoy it completely, So like we said, we're now working on year six and going for twenty-five.

Wayne's first 35mm photos

Going through some old files last week I ran across this series of photos that I took with my very first 35mm camera. It was a used Agfa that served me well for a number of years......simple but useful. And naturally we always shot in Kodak Tri-X film to get the very best shots and we always processed our own film in my kitchen sink with Peter's chemicals and made our own prints on a big cumbersome enlarger in the basement.

These photos were taken on the streets of Columbus, Indiana, where I had my first job out of college. The year was 1960 - forty-six years ago - damn near a half-century. I worked in the ad department of the Columbus Evening Republican and did some free-lance writing on the side for the paper.
I was in a new town and found everything a little exciting and entertaining......My friend Peter McGinnis was the son of a local real estate broker and one of my advertising accounts for the paper. We hit it off and he introduced me to his love - photography. (In this first photo you can see the reflection o my pride and joy, a 1957 Ford convertible in the reflection).
The area was where all the town's bars, liquor stores and pool halls were located...not a skid row, but just a cut above.

The interaction between the denizens of the area was fascinating. Although we were sitting in my car just at the curb, no one seemed to notice or care that we were photographing them.

Can't you just imagine what his guy is telling his wife, with child in tow, that he was doing in the bar or had to do in the bar.....my dad's excuse was always "gotta see a man about a dog."

And this happy lady getting ready to join the gang in the bar for a little social chit chat.

And then of course there is the new generation either looking for dad or getting ready to follow in his elder's footsteps.
